MULTIMEDIA VISUAL CENTER
The design journey began with a virtual site composed of multimedia programs, a theater, and a library, arranged around a central atrium. Circulation is primarily through stairs, with four balconies extending into the atrium at each level, inspired by DS+R’s Paralympic Museum in Colorado.
Circulation is facilitated by ramps wrapping around the columns, while programs are strategically placed around the atrium.
In the final design, I retained the six major columns as structural anchors and preserved the space between them as the atrium. The columns are wrapped with forms that repeat on each floor and are connected by hyperbolic surfaces, generating the twisting geometry.
Visitors enter from Washington Ave, with primary circulation via ramps attached alongside the atrium, supplemented by an elevator and enclosed staircases. Viewing booths emerge from the hyperbolic atrium form, segmented by floor slabs that extrude based on the atrium’s twisting angles.
