The project is inspired by the cultural vibrancy of Taiwanese night markets as a flexible food and learning hub for the Lower East Side community. During the day, the building functions as a green market where local residents sell fruits, vegetables, and plants they have grown, creating a neighborhood resource for fresh food and everyday exchange. Stalls open at dawn and wind down by mid-afternoon, supporting the shopping habits of the area’s older population, especially those living near Chinatown and the East Village.
In the evening, the site transforms into a night market inspired by Taiwanese street culture, filled with affordable food stalls, small vendors, and arcade games (claw machines, gacha, fishing games). This secondary program shifts the energy of the site toward younger population, extending the market’s civic reach across generations. The design embraces this dual identity and creating a single architectural framework that adapts to different needs of communities, timeframes, and cultures.
