The project reimagines a WPA pool facility into a year-round civic bathhouse through a mat-building approach. The design uses the roof and column systems to create a gradient transition from urban density to interior calm.
From the top view, the roof appears clean and uniform near the outer edges but becomes increasingly irregular and fragmented toward the interior. This progression reflects the contrast between the crowdedness of the areas outside the bathhouse and the more tranquil, open environment within the site.
This structural shift is echoed by the columns, starting with robust and regular at the perimenter, then transitioning to thinner and more irregular. These structural transformations create a continuous field that organizes movement, frames bathing spaces, and reinterprets the civic role of public bathhouses within the vertical city of New York
