THE FLOATING HOUSING

Faced with rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and an ongoing housing crisis, New York City’s vulnerable shorelines demand innovative solutions. This project envisions sustainable floating structures designed as live-work environments to address housing shortages while minimizing environmental impact. Collaborating with RISE (Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity), the proposal integrates biophilic design principles, marine-friendly materials, and modular prefabrication techniques to create adaptable, carbon-conscious spaces. These floating communities aim to preserve social networks, enhance economic opportunities, and provide resilient housing solutions for historically underserved waterfront neighborhoods.

This project envisions a modular system of floating houses that residents can personalize and adapt to their unique needs. By combining interchangeable segments, individuals and families can create demanded configurations for living and working spaces. The design celebrates diversity, with endless possibilities for arrangement and customization. These floating communities prioritize individuality while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic, transforming waterfront living into a dynamic and sustainable experience.
